Advantages Of Horizontal Milling Machine

New or used milling machines come in two basic types. Horizontal and vertical milling machine.

Advantages Of Horizontal Milling Machine

Horizontal machining is very cost effective and produces high quality products and CNC milling machine parts are not to expensive. This type of milling machine is designed to do it all with a large variety of hard materials. The process is quick and requires minimal setups along the way. This decreases the growing labor costs that often accompany any manufacturing environment. The finishes are superior and the final product comes out just as planned. Many horizontal mills are completely automated and need no human intervention to operate properly. All the programming is done ahead of time so that nothing is left to chance. This reduces processing time by about 25% because manual labor is no longer necessary.

Horizontal milling offers distinct advantages such as: performing general machining functions as well as other operations such as tapping and boring. This is generally done in one operation by one milling machine. This type of milling also eliminates most of the manual effort that was once required. Multiple setups are gone and tools don’t need to be changed quite as often. In addition, parts don’t need to be moved from machine to machine and from location to location. Delays in processing are minimal because there is no waiting required for the next machine because everything is done continuously by one machine.

A horizontal mill operates in much the same way as a vertical milling machine does. However, horizontal mills have overhead arm supports and cutters that are arbor driven.

These two features distinguish them from vertical models and add a bit more detail to the actual operation of the machine. Horizontal mills require you to pay a little more attention to safety and maintenance rules so that serious injuries do not ever occur.

A horizontal milling machine uses cutters that require continual maintenance to assure that they are always sharp. Other important safety precautions to be aware of are to use the appropriate tooth cutter and to leave the arm support in place when tightening or loosening the arbors.
