CNC Mill Overview

March 8th, 2010 admin No comments

A machine tool that shapes metal and other types of solid materials is called a milling machine. A CNC milling machine does this automatically once a computer sets up the specifications for the machine, it uses a rotating cutter to work like a drill to cut the material.

There is a difference between a drill and a milling machine however. A milling machine will use a cutter that rotates around a spindle axis and the table by which the piece of work is attached. A drill only moves along an axis and can only drill in one direction. A milling machine can move sideways and in and out like a drill.

The CNC milling machine can be controlled evenly by what is put into the computer. Some milling machines work in a way that the table is moved while the cutter stays in one place and rotates. CNC milling machines are digitally automated but other milling machines can be mechanically automated or operated manually.

A CNC milling machine makes the operator’s work easier because it can do a number of operations like panning, rebating, drilling, routing and more. Often a cutting fluid has to be used at the site of the cut because it needs to keep the metal cool and the cut lubricated; also it is used to move the sluice out of the way.

In CNC milling you will have a block of material that will be cut through by a rotating tool attached to the machine. You can actually move the piece in three dimensions all together so that you get the cut and shape that you want.

An operator can produce many different shapes with a CNC milling machine. For instance, if you have a 2D shape with an intricate pattern you can program the machine to do this pattern and repeat it as needed. The machine will also do 3D shapes, do different types of punches and even use a laser (usually a CNC Plasma Cutter).

Most metals and hard plastics are the best materials to use with a CNC milling machine because they can withstand the rigors of how the machine cuts. Softer materials are not able to stand up to the pressure of the process.

The CNC milling machine is best used when you need a short run of materials to be produced. This process also needs only a software program to do the tooling and some type of jig to hold the work down while it is being cut. The machine is programmed using G-Codes for more precision.

Today, CNC milling machines are being produced that can do a variety of things. As an example, Datron Dynamics sells a CNC milling machine that does all of the milling needs but also does industrial engraving. This machine can engrave on most metals including
Aluminum, graphite and stainless steel, but it can also engrave on ceramics and plastics.

The CNC Milling machine is a versatile machine and it can create many different parts while saving the company and the operator time and money.

Cnc Rotary Tables

March 7th, 2010 admin No comments

Important part of any new or used milling machines is CNC rotary table.

Cnc Rotary Tables

It is similar than a dividing head or indexing head except that it is fixed to be used in only two planes, the horizontal plane and the vertical plane. A CNC Rotary table is used for CNC milling and is made up of a solid base that has proper provisions for clamping metal material on tables and other kinds of equipment. The table of this CNC milling equipment is a precision machined disc that also has provision to clamp materials in it, that is aided with a T slot. This CNC milling equipment can rotate by itself or be controlled by a worm or a handheld operational control.

1. Extreme Accuracy

A graduated dial and a vernier scale allow this rotary table to be positioned to a high degree of accuracy. The center of CNC milling equipment has hole that allows a morse taper center or fixture to be inserted. A tailstock is usually provided if the rotary table can be mounted from its end, so that the axis will be horizontal. The most common use of this CNC milling equipment is on it vertical axis that in this mode is on the same plane as the cutter when it is used on a milling machine.

2. Coaxial Design

If the CNC rotary table is mounted on a secondary table the work piece is adjusted in the center around the rotary tables axis, in this position the work piece is centered around the cutting tools axis; this make all three axis coaxial. Making a way for the secondary table to be offset in either the x or y plane so that the cutter is pitched at a distance from the work piece’s center allowing a simultaneous operations on the work piece.

3. Specialized Or General?

There are literally hundreds of CNC milling equipments available on the market today with different specifications and different additional features. They come in all types of shapes and sizes. Some are designed for specific applications, while others are more of general purposes in nature. When looking for the right CNC rotary tables, try to talk to people who already using this kind of equipments from them you can learn how this things work. The good thing about talking to this people is that you will gain information not based on industrial propagandas but on experience and uses of there CNC milling equipments. You can also visit a shop in your area so that you will ly 1000 see on how CNC rotary tables work. You can eve try to use one CNC milling equipment to know how it feels. You can also attend CNC seminars to be able to gain professional views about his matters and also do not forget to check online information sites.

4. Setting Up Shop

When setting up your CNC rotary tables make sure that the platform is stable and your CNC milling machine secure. Setting up your CNC milling machines is a critical issue to early success, the less movement that occur the better. The right material to be used should also be thought about when using this kind of CNC milling machines. Determine the right thickness and sizes of your materials. Also look for proper fixtures for your CNC milling machines, for this will save time, money and frustration when using your CNC rotary tables.

Before going into production, make a plan to test the different variables you need to work with for a period of time. Getting familiar with your machine is also a critical issue for success. Try to make familiar with the different types of cut, type of materials to be cut, the table type, the depths of cut, the feed rates and the type and sizes of bits that you will be utilizing. Feel around the machine but not literally though for it may I injure you.

5. Satefy

Make sure to read your manuals and have a thorough understanding about the safety measures and the different features of your CNC milling machines. Have a good idea on how this things works. On what it can do to make your business prosper and also on how it can harm your employees.

CNC Milling

March 5th, 2010 admin No comments

CNC milling is a computer controlled process of cutting, drilling or carving trough different materials like metal, plastic or wood.

CNC Milling

Milling or Turning as it’s also known is used to shape pieces of metal or other raw materials for use in widget components. As most widgets are new designs, and as such most Milling centres are capable at doing a large range of tasks and activities, some of which are very complex including slot cutting, drilling, rebating, plaining and keyway cutting.

There are two main types of used milling machines, a vertical milling machine and a horizontal milling machine. The difference between the two is that the cutting tool used to cut the metal is either mounted horizontally or vertically. There is very little difference between the two, but occasionally pieces may need to be manufactured that do not fit within one of the milling machines. These are few and far between though, and generally speaking Horizontal Milling is more useful than Vertical, due to the fact that there’s a rotary table on the gears, allowing for 15 degree deviation for shallow angles.

The main benefit of Taig CNC milling machines is that the cutting process is controlled by a central computer. This eliminates a lot of the human error which can exist with standard milling. Furthermore, whilst many machines are the less versitile vertical milling, the precise nature of computer control means that a lot of the tasks impossible with human controlled Vertical Milling are possible with CNC Vertical Milling.

The vertical cutting also can move along a Z-Axis, allowing precise methods of cutting (such as engraving), not possible with manual machines. Although originally expensive, CNC Milling has dropped in price thanks to the low price of computers and open source software. Most companies that offer machining offer CNC Milling, meaning that if you approach a company for Milling, they may be able to manufacture the whole widget for you.

Milling machines are used to drill, sharpen or cut trough various materials like metal, wood, steel, plastic or carbon fiber.

Top Milling Machine

Some of the tasks that a milling machine can perform are: drilling, cutting, planing, keyway and slot cutting, diesinking, routing, rebating and so much more. If you truly want a machine that can do it all, especially when it comes to metal, then the milling machine is the perfect solution for you.

Used milling machines can be controlled through various different means. They can be operated manually. They can be digitally operated. They can be mechanically automated. They can even be operated through a computer system which is also known as computer numeric controlled (CNC).

DIY CNC milling machine can eliminate a lot of the manual labor for you. The CNC machine is controlled through a computer software program. The computer tells the machine exactly what to do by the way the software program is written. CNC machines are operated on several different axes and the software program has to written to accommodate the different axis. In other words, if the Z axis is left out in the software program, the machine will not move up and down. The computer software program is essentially the brain of the machine.

With that being said, you will have to know how to write a program that the machine can read and it will have to written to certain specifications that the project requires. If one little mistake is made, then the final product will not be to the right specifications. This can cause many problems.

Basically, the CNC milling machine can operate completely on its own once the program has been written and downloaded to the machine. The operator will only have to get the machine set up with the right tools for the job and get the material into the proper position. From there, as they say, the rest is history. The machine will not stop until the complete program has been run through and the product is finished based upon what the program says. This will allow the operator to tend to other jobs or machines in the meantime.

Hobby CNC milling machines are even available for the small shops or the individual hobbyist. The milling machine is available in many different sizes and forms. From commercial grade to homemade milling machines, this is definitely a machine that is desired for the workshop.

If you have questions about a milling machine, ask around. These machines as they are becoming more and more popular with both individuals and large corporations. You can also log onto YouTube and watch many videos pertaining to milling machines. Finally, contact a dealer of milling machines. They will be able to answer your questions and help to guide you in the right direction if you are thinking about purchasing one for yourself or your business.

Choosing A Vertical Milling Machine

March 1st, 2010 admin No comments

Milling machines are available in two main types. Horizontal and vertical milling machine. In this blog you will find out the main differences between those two types.

Choosing A Vertical Milling Machine

There is really not a lot to know about how a vertical milling machine operates. It is really quite a simple process and very easy to understand. It simply uses a rotating cutting tool that makes machined surfaces. It does this by removing material from the workpiece itself. It also has the capability of a drill because its spindling device is perpendicular to the table. The drill can then be driven into the workpiece.

This type of machine is run by various control functions. Machine mills include start and stop buttons, forward and reverse levers which control the spindle’s rotating direction, a braking device for the spindle, a spindle speed regulator, a handwheel which moves the table both in and out and a handcrank that raises and lowers the table. Other control features include a handle to move the spindle and a lock that activates when the milling process begins. There is also a spindle stop, feed level and selector available on many models. Often vertical mills are completely automated, making the entire process free of manual labor.

One of the best companies manufacturing milling machines today is Bridgeport. Even their used milling machines will work perfectly for years. This excellent company offers a complete line of vertical mills. It stands by all of its products and prides itself on the affordability of its products and its high performance standards. With a Bridgeport mill, the customer always comes first and is assured that all parts will be completed with perfection every time. A Bridgeport is built for accuracy and will last for many, many years. The customer can be confident that a Bridgeport vertical mill will give outstanding and reliable performance via its quick traverse rates, durable spindles and innovative control systems.

A vertical milling machine today contains the most up-to-date features and often is digitized for even better performance. Its digital readouts increase the accuracy of cuts and enhance overall productivity. With these readouts, the table movement can be accurately measured to 2/10,000 of an inch. Additional features of these readouts are that they can run with either relative or absolute measurements and can display information in millimeters and/or inches.

Advantages Of Horizontal Milling Machine

February 28th, 2010 admin No comments

New or used milling machines come in two basic types. Horizontal and vertical milling machine.

Advantages Of Horizontal Milling Machine

Horizontal machining is very cost effective and produces high quality products and CNC milling machine parts are not to expensive. This type of milling machine is designed to do it all with a large variety of hard materials. The process is quick and requires minimal setups along the way. This decreases the growing labor costs that often accompany any manufacturing environment. The finishes are superior and the final product comes out just as planned. Many horizontal mills are completely automated and need no human intervention to operate properly. All the programming is done ahead of time so that nothing is left to chance. This reduces processing time by about 25% because manual labor is no longer necessary.

Horizontal milling offers distinct advantages such as: performing general machining functions as well as other operations such as tapping and boring. This is generally done in one operation by one milling machine. This type of milling also eliminates most of the manual effort that was once required. Multiple setups are gone and tools don’t need to be changed quite as often. In addition, parts don’t need to be moved from machine to machine and from location to location. Delays in processing are minimal because there is no waiting required for the next machine because everything is done continuously by one machine.

A horizontal mill operates in much the same way as a vertical milling machine does. However, horizontal mills have overhead arm supports and cutters that are arbor driven.

These two features distinguish them from vertical models and add a bit more detail to the actual operation of the machine. Horizontal mills require you to pay a little more attention to safety and maintenance rules so that serious injuries do not ever occur.

A horizontal milling machine uses cutters that require continual maintenance to assure that they are always sharp. Other important safety precautions to be aware of are to use the appropriate tooth cutter and to leave the arm support in place when tightening or loosening the arbors.

When you are looking for CNC milling machine parts and components there are a variety of places where you can find them. There are many Internet sites and the machines come in a variety of prices.

Depending on the type of machine you need the price can be steep but there are many small machines that can do the same job if you are looking at this as part of a small business or a hobby. Also, you can buy a machine to cut metal or wood, to do fancy scroll work or to do engraving on metals and other applications.

You can decide whether you will purchase a brand new machine or a used one. Most people do not suggest buying a used one because you aren’t sure what you are getting but buying other types of machines like CNC routers seem to be a good idea because of the cost.

All CNC Milling machines contain the following parts:

-Axis — depending on the type of CNC milling machine it could have anywhere from one to six axis which will also determine the size and what it is supposed to do.

-Column — the column is what travels along an axis that holds the part that mills or cuts.

-Control panel — the part that holds the computer keyboard (sometimes small, other times large) where you program the G-Codes into the machine.

-Cutting tool — the cutting tool is attached to the column and is the part that actually cuts the piece in the way that the operator specifies.

-Spindle — the spindle holds the cutting tool in place.

-Coolant supply tubes — these are the tubes where they coolant is pumped through in order to keep the metal cool and the cutting tool lubricated.

-Table — the table is the area that the workpiece will be attached to either using a clamp or a vacuum. This is where the workpiece will sit while being milled.

There are several different types of milling machines that can be found and they are small or large depending on what they do. Here are a few:

Vertical CNC mills have a vertical spindle axis. This means that the cutters that do the milling are held vertically in the spindle and they rotate on the spindle’s axis. In this type you can extend the spindle or the table to make drilling or plunge cuts. Bed mills and Turret mills fall into this category.

Horizontal CNC mills have the same type of table as vertical CNC mills but their cutters are mounted on an arbor that sits across the table horizontally.

Hobbyists will most likely use a box mill which is mounted to a bench and basically moves up and down. Knee mills have an x-y table and its moves up and down the column. It can be adjusted with what is called a vertically adjustable knee. Many larger industries use the C-Frame mill because it is the most conducive for larger work. They are only vertically mobile and it used a fixed spindle head for that movement.

Full metal head upgrade
James, I would be worried about obtaining spare parts for any non branded CNC upgrades. I have not done any CNC upgrades with my mini titan yet but when the time comes I will probably just upgrade the bits that don’t break in a ‘normal’.

To the best of my knowledge, all cars around the world are designed in metric and even in Detroit you find many shops that have converted all the prints they use to manufacture CNC parts to inches, with really odd dimensions all over.
